Good: El Mariachi. Robert Rodriguez gives a very informative and entertaining lesson in how to make a movie this good for $7,000.

Bad: Blazing Saddles. Mel Brooks only talks over about an hour of the film, and only offers generic information about the film that never refers to what's currently onscreen, and a lot of which turns up in the BTS extra anyway.

So what if your solo movies fell through so the studio decided to make a Justice League movie and introduce all of you at once but other directors have gone on record wishing that they'd waited until the Batman and Superman trilogies are done not to mention the fact that Christian Bale and Brandon Routh won't be along to give continuity which the fans desperately want but the studio seems to think that people won't be confused or turned off by much younger looking actors and are still rushing to make it a summer tentpole in spite of the innate fan disapproval on every fansite online which the studios claim to respect but every bit of forward momentum on this project causes fans everywhere to believe otherwise? It could still be okay.

Good: t2 - the criterion edition. its great to hear the whole cast talk about the movie.

bad: "Practical magic" audio VERY hard to hear and even with the volume turned up all the way to 11 its still hard to hear sandra bullock speak.

Best: UHF, Weird Al and Director Jay Levey (With a few guests here and there)talk about in great detail every little factoid that you could possibly think of as it pretains to Al's little 1989 movie and have plenty of fun in the process.

Worst: Snatch, not because the content was horrible but just because it was very dry and not very memorible.

Speedy, but a BAD John Carpenter commentary??!?!

Okay, his commentary track for GHOSTS OF MARS was crap...but THE THING was pretty good....

Speaking of which, a bad commentary track is Bredan Fraser's track for THE MUMMY.

I liked the commentary for The Thing as well. I also liked the commentary for There's Nothing Out There. It was an interesting to hear some ot the things they did to make due on a low budget movie.

I was not very impressed with the commentary for The Matrix. I think there's a newer version of it that probably has a different commentary, but the one I have isn't very informative.

Best: Thumb Wars with writer/producer Steve Oedekirk and the director cracking on about their silly movie.

Worst: Yojimbo with a very very dry comment track from some Kurosawa film expert I never heard of.

Best: Blair Witch Project and Way of the Gun Both very informative regarding film making and the movies themselves.

Worst: The Master Gunfighter... (still laughing) The really awful Tom Laughlin flick made between Trial and BJ goes to Washington with commentary by Tom and company talking about how well done the movie was and how difficult it was to achieve the visual poetry captured on film.. (hahahahahaha... breaking into Joker laughter)And the talent they came up with for the roles and...

The review on Jabootu was completely on target and still didn't capture the total lameness of that movie.

And Tom does commentaries for the Billy Jack DVDs too... a man with no shame at all

Good:

Reefer Madness - Mike Nelson is hilarious talking about this ultra cheesy look at how pot can drive you INSANE! If you miss the good old days of MST3k and would like to hear new riffing, I highly recommend this DVD for the commentary alone.

Hellboy - I really liked this commentary, since the cast came off as really liking one another and thus made the experience very fun and enjoyable. Selma Blair does come off as a bit of a ditz, and Pearlman tends to talk a lot, but other than that it's a very informative little commentary.

Bad:

From Justin to Kelly: Yes, I've actually sat down and tried to listen to the commentary for this dreadful musical, and yes, it's every bit as boring as you could imagine. Justin and Kelly are extremely bland, and the director of the film is no better. If you like tidbits about how cold certain shooting days were, you'll be enraptured by this crap.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Okay, is it just me, or do the commentaries for this show make you wanna scream? Commentaries are meant to provide the audience behind-the-scenes info, but I swear to God one episode track was just someone playing the guitar for 10 MINUTES STRAIGHT. And then, after that ridiculous exericise, someone moans the title of the show and the episode literally ends not 30 seconds later. Yeah, I really felt like I was getting my money's worth.

Some of my favorite commentaries include:

South Park's season 4 mini-commentaries - The solution to filmmakers not having enough to say about their work. Rather than settling for dead air or lame jokes, Trey and Matt just get all of the interesting information out of the way in 5-7 minutes for each episode, and then stop.

Danny Elfman's commentary for Edward Scissorhands - This is combined with an excellent music-only track (he speaks during the unscored scenes). A great score and Elfman's discussion about creating it - and, near the end, its afterlife of sorts in being constantly quoted in commercials and trailers - is really interesting.

The worst commentary I know is probably Battlefield Earth's, which is brought to us by the director, simply because he doesn't seem to understand why people don't like this movie.

I haven't heard that many commentaries, but I'll still add my two cents:

Best: The commentaries for Clerks and Mallrats. Funny stuff, and you have to get a laugh out of Jason Mewes passing out due to an alcoholic stupor while recording an audio commentary.

Worst: Carrot Top's commentary of The Rules of Attraction. Yes, for no reason at all, on that DVD, they have a hidden commentary done by Carrot Top. It's as dumb as it sounds, as he doesn't exactly state any pithy or witty comments concerning the film.

I love the Freaks And Geeks commentaries, especially all of the female cast member's recollections of Samm Levine trying to "get with all the ladies" and making fun of him. The Almost Famous Bootleg edition one is excellent too, with Cameron Crowe trying not to swear in front of his mom, who is doing the commentary too.

Another great one is on the Doors Collection DVD with Dance On Fire, Hollywood Bowl and Soft Parade. The band (minus Jim) remember old videos and performances and tell stories about Jim, including one where Robby Krieger tries to take him to a park and he turns around and Jim isn't wearing pants. That was hilarious!

Some I don't like are the Strangers With Candy DVD ones. I expected them to be great, but it's mostly just laughing at their own jokes.

Be a Posture Pal!

Jerri Blank: You know, your parents never really leave you, unless of course they die and then they are gone forever.

Principal Blackman: That was a bold ramble to come from such a loser.

Good: Commentary for Boogie Nights and Wrath of Khan

Bad: Star Trek V William Shatner doesn't seem to remember anything important or interesting, in fact his daughter who is also a commentator, is more interesting than he is!

On a side note, commentary that I am dreading it the release of the original Star Wars on dvd. George Lucas is so mono-tone and boring it puts me to sleep every time I hear him talk.

The director-writer commentaries on both LOTR EEs so far are great. Possibly the most remarkable thing about them is despite having only three people who all sit together, as far as I can tell there isn't one pause in 7+ hours of movie! Loved Jackson's jokes about tv spinoffs like Treebeard.

Yesterday i listened to one of the best comentary track i ever had the pleasure to listen to: Chen Kaige's comentary fo his movie THE EMPEROR AND THE ASSASSIN. Though he has a somewhat heavy accent, he speaks a very good english and is very fluent, and he expresses his ideas beyind the movie and his motivations, together with some of his own personal history, to make for a very enlighted comentary. I do hope he makes more for his other movies, like RAISE OF THE RED LANTER and JOU DOU.

Terrible comentary ever was, i have to say, and because it was so sparse and useless, THE OMEN 3.

Another comentary track is bad, partialy, if the USA DVD edition of THE MATRIX, whenever John Gaeta talks. That man can cure insimnias, i tell you. I actualy fell asleep when i heard it.

But, on the plus side and in the same DVD, the compoer's comentary is excelent.

Anotehr great kick ass comentary if the director/writer and composer for WAY OF THE GUN.
