I literally just got back from the theatre, and here's what I have to say about 'The Brothers Grimm'.

To start off, this movie is dark, VERY dark. Figuratively, it is dark enough to scare young children, hence the PG-13 rating. And it is also, unfortunately, VERY corny. Dear God, every other sentence emitted by the two brothers, Will Grimm and Jacob Grimm, is an unfunny, dry comment (but it is mostly birthed from Jacob's, played by Heath Ledger, unintelligible mouth) that make myself and the audience groan in anguish and remorse. And yes, I said unintelligible. I could hardly understand him half the time, even with his FAKE English accent. Will Grimm, played by Matt Damon of course, had a bad English accent too, but fortunately he didn't have many lines, unless he's verbally abusing his younger brother. By the way, their roles were actually switched, because Matt Damon is the star and should be the hero. Heath was stuck at being the younger and geekier brother. As it figures, Heath does more of the work in the film (like, figuring out where the evil witch lives and destroying her).

Now I have to say that when I first heard about this film via Yahoo! movies, I thought that this was going to be a comedy, because Terry Gilliam, the director of the film, also directed the Monty Python feature films (amongst '12 Monkeys', 'The Fisher King', and other weird movies, I know, but hey we have to admit that we all recognize him better as the 'Monty Python guy'). I thought that 'The Brothers Grimm' would be satirical in a fantasy setting, like Gilliam's probably least known and weakest project 'Jabberwocky'. Alas, no! This movie screamed 'Sleepy Hollow' at me constantly, and I felt that every 'horror' scene should be laden with gore. I am associating 'horror' with when the Witch or another being or force possessed by the Witch 'abducts' a child...that's how simple I can put it. I got a little confused half-way through the film.

There are some wonderfully imaginative yet gruesome scenes, again involving the children, but would scare the bloody hell out of a child (hey, I'm 16, and if I'm freaked out by a movie lacking gore, then I know that smaller children will react even worse). My personal favourite scene in the entire movie was when a horse entraps a child in a sticky web-like substance excreted from its mouth (long story) and swallows the child whole. After that I couldn't help but roll my eyes when they showed the horse again with its belly larger than a pregnant mare's. Okay, so, a 60-pound toddler caused that bulge? Whatever, I give up. One of the odder scenes was when a girl lost her 'face' after a cursed crow sprays her with mud. It's hard to explain, but it's interesting.

The rest of the movie was painful. Bad acting, bad accents, and a confusing plot equals major disappointment from moi. Whenever I am dying to see a promising movie, my expectations become theories. I actually found myself bored at times, as the movie is quite boring. Things start to pick up near the end, and until then you are left struggling to understand this damn annoying French/Italian (?) guy's unintelligible accent. I don't feel like going further in characters, so you'll just have to see the movie or take my word for it. In short, I gave the movie an average rating, simply because of the effort put into it and the imaginative story, if you get it. Does this 'imaginative story' awaken the child within? No, it scares it instead. Just keep that in mind before you drag your kids to see this. I swear everyone in the theatre had kids with them. Why not take them to see 'Valiant' or something instead of this weird, freaky stuff? Jeez...

I feel this movie's better than what you give it credit for. Heath Ledger is surprisingly good, and the fact it's Terry Gilliam makes it good. Because it's a dark movie probably helped it, because usually dark movies are pretty good (except that third Harry Potter movie).

Favorite scene: Sasha becomes The Gingerbread Man (she loses her eyes to a pile of mud after she holds a dead bird, the pile of mud comes alive, takes her, morphs into The Gingerbread Man, bites off her thumb, and says "I'm good." Funny.)
