I found this online: the stange and evil tale of the production of Superman V. It spans decades, $50,000,000 is spent before they even have even settled on a writer or director. It's so horrible. It's out of date as it stops in the middle of 2004, but it's so horrible, you have to read it.

I’m at a lost for words. I’m more interested in how rosybloom found the time to scribe all of this. The post is so long that it seemed like rosybloom got an entire army of ghostwriters to help out.

Ugh. This is why I zoomed right toward post-production when I went to school.

I learned—painfully—that there is a difference between good and bad trash, if you're going to write novels about innocent young women who fall backwards into being fashion models and international movie stars and succumb to hedonism, Daddy complexes, barbiturate addictions, selfish lovers, marriages with impotent older men and bitter fights over large inheritances.

Two points:
1) I am continually astounded that sometimes a good movie manages to get made.
2) What the heck's so wrong with making a good old "classic" style Superman movie? What was so wrong with the Superman mythos in the first place that it has to be "re-imagined?"

A third bonus point: I am increasingly becoming disenchanted with Tim Burton. Back in the 90's I was the biggest Tim Burton fanboy you've ever seen, but lately, I don't know, it seems I've outgrown him.

I have to disagree with this article that the backlash from the Abrams travesty was staved becvause of Harry Knowles. From what I could gather it trashed Harry's credibility with the fans. Everyone wanted, and still want Moriarty to take over AICN because it's becoming apparent Harry's a Studio whore. Harry's pining of the Abrams script has knocked him down several hundred knotches and I don't think he's recovered from it. Of course that salacious, geekasm Blade II review hasn't helped either.

This is a really big, bald faced lie. I am a member of the Hype and nobody, nobody likes Jon Peters at all.

As with Servo, my respect for Mr. Cage has been raised.

My respect for everyone else on the crew end (with the exception of Kevin Smith) has been lowered.

Bring me the head of Jon Peters!!

A very interesting topic, rosybloom. This topic can be called many things, but "spam" is not one of them; more like "deep," "insightful," "informative," and "long."

And to think that the excellent animated series that aired on Kid's WB was vastly overlooked (I suppose that's now a good thing, given all things said about Herr Dokteur Peters).

Ditto.

Other surprising props I have to give after reading:

quote:
Michael Bay was offered to direct the film again, but he felt the script violated the essence of Superman and refused the offer.

WB made Justin Timberlake a firm offer to cast him as Superman…which he turned down cold, saying "whatever it is you’re smoking, I don’t want any part of it" (Superman-V.com got the scoop).

Ironically, it *seems* the Justice League/Supes animated series borrowed some rejected script ideas, like Luthiac and the Krypton-borne Braniac (although I'm not sure if the Superman AS one preceded that script or not).

The series premiere for the animated series aired on September 6, 1996, according to World's Finest.

Oh, and Drew isn't? May I remind you of his glowing review of The Real Cancun which happened a few months after he just happened to have gone on a junket to Cancun for a set visit of a 'reality movie'? Coincidence?

I only have three words:

What the f**k.

Warner Bros. became mindless drones.

But hey, Bryan Singer's now making it, so that's a good thing.

This story alone deserves its own movie. I call it "A Thousand Monkeys: The Superman Lives story".

I never was a fan of the Man of Steel, but boy....I never wanted to see this kind of thing happen to him. And these are the people who don't understand why box office returns are never what they want them to be?

It's the inherent problem of being inside the industry, it's full of suck ups and yes men that will parrot anything said by whoever has the highest grossing movie or greates clout with the Studio Heads. Why else was Burton allowed such free reign on this project due to the fact that his fan base would ensure a good return. These people spend way too much time in Hollywood.

Holy Zarquon's Singing Fish!

They really carry on like this, do they? I had no idea. It sounds a bit like the writing world, really - full of different powerful positions, organised through bribery and expensive lunches, and governed by volatile, ego-driven personalities. And I haven't even been in the writing biz for very long.
I had high hopes for this new Superman movie, but they died when I read about this shenanigans. It's a sure sign a movie's going to fail when it's being played around with by people who are so obviously clueless. Great movies tend to be so because they're the result of an inspired vision from a brilliant person, who managed to find other brilliant minds to help. Or that's what I think, anyway. I mean... Star Wars started out as George Lucas' personal vision, a dream he chased and achieved despite all odds. And it's one of the most inspiring Hollywood stories ever (please, PLEASE don't start going on about how lousy the new ones were).
But looks like this new Superman's going to be one of those movies made by committee. Very bad sign. Can't make a good book that way, can't make a good movie that way. I mean... when I write a book I ignore everyone's suggestions and do what's right for the book. No-one ever wrote a good one by trying to please everyone.
A movie made by committee is basically doomed from the start. Everyone puts in a nice colour and it comes out grey.
