This is a thread for stand-up comedy enthusiasts, obviously. Discuss some of your favorite comedians here, and, if you feel so inclined, share some of their best jokes. Here's a quick list of the men and women who have consistently made me laugh:
* Maria Bamford * Elvira Kurt * Lewis Black * Mario Cantone

I've been a Mitch Hedberg fan for a while.
"Why do they give receipts for donuts now? I give you the money, you give me the donut. We don't need to bring ink and paper into this. I can't think of a single situation where I would have to prove that I bought a donut. Do I have a skeptical friend or something?" |
So what if your solo movies fell through so the studio decided to make a Justice League movie and introduce all of you at once but other directors have gone on record wishing that they'd waited until the Batman and Superman trilogies are done not to mention the fact that Christian Bale and Brandon Routh won't be along to give continuity which the fans desperately want but the studio seems to think that people won't be confused or turned off by much younger looking actors and are still rushing to make it a summer tentpole in spite of the innate fan disapproval on every fansite online which the studios claim to respect but every bit of forward momentum on this project causes fans everywhere to believe otherwise? It could still be okay. |

| Well, considering my career goal in life is to be a standup comic, yes. |

I like too many to list them all. If I had to choose favorites though...
Adam Ferrarra Jay Mohr Robin Williams The Amazing Johnathan Jeff Foxworthy (and God help me) Gallagher
I say God help me because I realize a lot of people don't like Gallagher. But he was one of the first stand up comics I ever saw (on TV, I've never seen him live) and since then I've always been a fan, even if he is corny.
EDIT: Actually, there's one more I forgot. I forgot his name but he was on Comedy Central Presents recently. I liked him because he's the first white entertainer I've ever seen who wasn't scared to acknowledge the fact that blacks and whites are different. And because, as racist as this is going to sound, it was good to finally see someone get back at the blacks for decades of "white people are stupid" jokes. |

Comedians wht 'stand up'? Oh no, I'm getting Howling: New Moon Rising flashbacks! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Or perhaps: KKKKKKKKKKHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNN! What did you do?!?! Don't make me...stand up - testiffffffffffyyyyyyy... I don't think I can help you with any names, though it can be fun when done right. If you consider stand-up improvisation I could suggest Whose Line Is It Anyway? - a wonderful show really. Is it still airing over there in America I wonder? |

Huh?!?!?! Where did that come from? I'm sorry but I don't think so. Must be a simple spelling mistake or something. Don't you hate it when that happens? |

Well, actually, his first name IS spelled "Denis".
As for me, I don't really watch Comedy Central all that often, so I'm not up to date on this kind of stuff, but here's who I like:
*George Carlin (a true legend) *Bill Cosby (ditto) *Dennis Miller (yeah I know, but I have laughed at some of his stuff; it just wasn't on Monday Night Football! ) *Eddie Murphy (back when he was a comic and was, you know, funny; Delirious and Raw are classics) *Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall, Ron White, Larry the Cable Guy (the four guys of the hilarious "Blue Collar Comedy Tour: The Movie")
There are some other people that I haven't really had the chance to hear yet, but if I did, I might include them on the list.
I know that Comedy Central did a list of the top 100 comics, and that was the typical dumb list you'd expect, as a lot of it focused on the career of the person in other fields, NOT on how funny they were. I mean, Roseanne was in the top 10! If I'm lying, I'm dying. |

Speaking of him... I've heard people say that Denis Leary based basically his entire act off of Hicks, but since I haven't seen any of B.H.'s work, I can't say if that's valid or not. I mean, he didn't make any Quaker State commercials like Leary did! |

Well, his show is great, but I haven't really seen any of his standup work.
I'm not really a fan of Rock just for that incomprehensible (and not funny either) "No Sex in the Champagne Room", a "song" that's title doesn't even make any sense to me... is it common knowledge that there's supposed to be sex in places called the champagne room? I just don't get it. |

Being a Brit, I'm biased towards our stand-ups. My personal favourites are Eddie Izzard and Bill Bailey. For those of you not in the know, Izzard is the transvestite stand-up whose show Dress To Kill can be seen on HBO. Bill Bailey is a musical maniac who gets as much comedy out of mucking about with a keyboard as he does by telling jokes. If you'd like to hear some of his musical parodies, try here: http://muse.cream.org/bill/bewilder.html
The Chris de Burgh parody Beautiful Ladies is abso-bloody-lutely hysterical... especially when I conned the DJ at my wedding into playing it |

Um... er... well... It's a strip club reference. In most places, the patrons are not allowed to touch the dancers. In some places, they are. And in some places, the rules say one thing, but the dancers say another and it's up to the patron to figure out which is which. Or play it safe. His lyrics are a play on this...
some clubs have special rooms for VIPs. theoretically, more could/can/does(?) happen in these rooms than normal. a lot of NBA stars, like Patrick Ewing, were outed for a series of exploits at a strip club in Atlanta called (I think) The Gold Club a few years back. anyway, some of these special rooms are called 'champagne rooms'. i don't exactly know why, but it's pretty easy to guess champage=upscale=VIP.
Me? I like George Carlin. Even older-than-dirt George Carlin is better than 95% of what I see these days. |
