Hilarious and at times kinda frightening book from the great Jon Ronson.(who wrote the amazing look at conspiracy theories "Them")
Nominally it's about the actual psychic warfare operations that the U.S. army seriously researched back during the cold war and it starts off with very funny and very insane stories during this time.(including a Vietnam vet who wanted to turn the army into "Gaia warriors") But soon it goes inoto dark territory when we learn that the few ideas that we didn't throw away from that time became used in some new disturbing methods.
The darkest point in the book concerns a man who is convinced that his father was murdered by his own CIA buddies because he was going to blow the whistle on a black-ops torture sight. At first Ronson like everybody else thinks the guy is a little nuts but soon he becomes won over with his honesty and his passion to prove this case.
