Land of the Dead was total fucking garbage next to the original Dawn of the Dead or even Day of the Dead. It's almost as if George went 'hay how can i make this even more contrived and with ham-fisted social commentary!' The difference between Dawn's message on consumerism and Land's... what ever the fuck it was (i've forgotten; it's been a year since i've seen it, and i'm sure as hell not going to seek it out) was that Dawn's actually worked within the plot of the movie.

God, what a shitty movie.

Are you trying to tell me that Rhodes and the rest of his overacting, cackling ilk weren't annoying as hell?

Anyway, since everyone's making lists, here's mine (again, 'haven't seen Diary yet):

1. Dawn
2. Night
3. Land
4. Day

I'm going to see Diary of the Dead, probably going to see it at a friend's house though because I can't buy a movie if none of my other family members wants to see it. I like movies seen through video camera (I liked Cloverfield a lot), and I like zombie movie, so I would love this movie. Live long Romero.

Diary's message is the most ham-fisted of the lot. It's also the most contrived. If you're interested in watching Diary, I'd recommend seeing it before my review as I plan to spoil a lot of it.

As for the message of Land, it's a toss up between class warfare and the US invasion of Iraq.

It tasted like a penis." - From the award-winning Lord of the Rings/ Harry Potter slash fic The Time Machine

I've seen all five and I'd say Land is the weakest. I liked Diary, I think it was about as good as Night, maybe a little better. The snuffs area bit over the top which was odd but enjoyable, felt a bit more like Sam Raimi or Peter Jackson horror flick at some points.

I didn't mind Land's social commentary. It wasn't bad. What made land weak was familiarity. In the other four movies the protagonists were dealing with the pressure of a rapidly decaying situation with multiple unknown factors. The fear, paranoia and desperation levels were kept high. That's what it's all about. In Land humanity had adapted fully and it was more like a heist flick or action movie. There just wasn't enough horror. Also Dennis Hopper's death was pretty lame compared to the human villain snuffs in the preceding movies.

Zombie top 10 list... that sounds like a challenge. Ten Zombie movies I enjoyed.

1. Dawn of the Dead (original)
2. Shaun of the Dead
3. Day of the Dead
4. Dead Alive
5. Planet Terror
6. Night of the Living Dead
7. Diary of the Dead
8. Army of Darkness
9. 28 Days Later (technically disputable)
10. Return of the Living Dead (Tarman woot!)

Honorable mentions: Land of the Dead, Dead and Breakfast, White Zombie

If they are going undercover as zombies and just get their asses devoured in 30 seconds, to leave the rest of the movie a regular zombie flick...I'd see that.

Nah, it'd probably just be 90 minutes of how caucasian zombies are different than African American zombies.

I had the exact opposite problem. The movie has an almost ludicrous amount of opportunities for social commentary...then doesn't have any! It's truly bizarre, especially considering what Romero did before. The first three movies made so much more out of so much less.

I learned—painfully—that there is a difference between good and bad trash, if you're going to write novels about innocent young women who fall backwards into being fashion models and international movie stars and succumb to hedonism, Daddy complexes, barbiturate addictions, selfish lovers, marriages with impotent older men and bitter fights over large inheritances.
